Parent Taught Oklahoma Driver Education

On November 1, 2001 Oklahoma enacted Parent Taught Driver Education. It became law as a result of Senate Bill 747 passed by the legislature and signed by Governor Frank Keating. The Parent Taught Drivers Ed Program is designed to provide Driver Education to students who are otherwise unable to receive it in school or through a commercial driving school. Oklahoma has enjoyed the benefits of driver education in school settings for years and today is in keeping with the trends of alternative sources of driver education to target more young drivers.

May 17, 1999, Oklahoma became the 33rd state in the nation to pass a Graduated Driver Education License law with the signing of SB 413. The Graduated Driver License law was strengthened in 2005 with HB 1653. This law requires teens to apply for the license, which restricts their driving time to the hours of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., with exceptions for driving to work, school, church or related activities, or if driving with a licensed driver is seated next to the teenager. It also prohibits teens with a restricted license from driving with multiple passengers younger than age 21 (other than family).

Do we need a GDL program?

Oklahoma's teenage drivers have more crashes than any other age group. This is one reason insurance premiums are so high for teen drivers. During their first year of driving, 25% of 16 year-olds either receive a ticket or are involved in a crash. Increasing Drivers Ed requirement hopefully will help.

Where can I get a manual to study for my written or skill test?

Manuals are included within the course but you can also go to your local Driver License Exam Stations. There is no charge for the manual, and you are encouraged to study prior to taking your test(s).

If I fail my driving test, when can I return for my next test?

If you do not already have a driving permit, you can take the skills test up to three times. A one-week minimum waiting period is required between each test, but can be longer at the discretion of the examiner. If you do not pass the third test, you will be required to obtain a learners permit and hold it for at least 30 days.

If you do already have a permit, you can take up to three skills tests with a minimum one-week waiting period between each test (or longer, at the discretion of the examiner). Subsequent tests can be administered every 30 days thereafter.
